North Dakota lies on the central border between the United States and Canada. The Missouri River flows through the western regions of the state exiting into South Dakota. This area contains the largest parcels of public lands in North Dakota: Cedar River National Grasslands and Little Missouri National Grasslands. Several national wildlife refuges protect important waterfowl habitat on more than 100,000 acres in western North Dakota. Navigable rivers in the region include the Missouri River and its tributaries, the Little Missouri, Cannonball and Knife Heart. North Dakota is characterized glacier-carved lakes and dense forests. The largest state forest in North Dakota, Turtle Mountain State Forest, encompasses nearly 8,000 acres.

Canoeing is a popular pursuit on the many navigable rivers throughout the state. Bird watching, horseback riding and hiking facilities are available at most wildlife refuges in the state.

North Dakota, one of the most rural States in the USA, is famous for its scenery and Old West heritage. Fargo, on the eastern border, is the State’s largest city. The metropolitan area of Fargo-Moorhead is a prime tourist destination, with attractions such as Plains Art Museum, Red River Zoo, Fargo Air Museum, Children’s Museum at Yunker Farm and Bonanzaville (a restored pioneer village). The Reineke Fine Arts Center, at the North Dakota State University, has music, theatre and other events, while the nearby FargoDome hosts the NDSU football team, as well as other sporting events and popular music acts. The 28,329 hectare (70,000 acre) Theodore Roosevelt National Park set in the Badlands of western North Dakota offers spectacular views and includes the restored cow-town of Medora. Fort Abraham Lincoln, south of Mandan, was the final command and home of Lt Colonel George Custer, where he and his Seventh Cavalry departed for the Battle of Little Bighorn. Other North Dakota attractions include the recreation areas around Lake Sakakawea and the Little Missouri River; the Fort Union Trading Post and Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Sites; the Custer House, Fort Lincoln; and the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center.
